UPDATE: Limited Colored Potato Supplies
October 17, 2019
Persistent rain, cold weather, and snow continue to curtail harvesting in the Michigan, North Dakota, and Wisconsin growing regions. Expect rising prices.
Growers are contending with saturated fields and standing water, limiting access to fields for production
Current conditions could affect the quality of long-term storage supplies
Of major concern is how the adverse weather will affect the Red River Valley growing region in Minnesota and North Dakota
The Red River Valley is the largest producer of red potatoes in the U.S.
Roughly 50% of the potato crop is still in the ground
Demand will shift toward western growing regions, such as Idaho and Washington, which are also experiencing weather-related harvesting challenges
