UPDATE: HURRICANE POLO

October 5, 2026

Hurricane Polo dissipated over northwest Mexico late Tuesday after making landfalls in Baja California Sur and near Guaymas, Sonora. Flooding, saturated fields, power interruptions, and transportation delays remain the primary produce concerns. While widespread crop losses have not been confirmed, growers continue to assess fields as conditions allow.

  • Baja California Sur: Coastal and road flooding, power outages, and debris were reported after Polo’s initial landfall
    • Produce impacts appear to be localized; however, growers may see short-term delays with harvesting, packing, and outbound transportation
    • Wind and standing water could also create some quality concerns
  • Sonora/Guaymas: Flooding has been reported in Guaymas and in nearby cucumber fields
    • Growers expect the fields will need until Monday to dry before they can get in and assess the damage
    • Squash and cucumbers are the primary concerns, and we could see harvest and loading concerns due to limited field access
  • Flood-related damage could impact October production start dates and overall yields
  • Chihuahua/Northern Sinaloa: Heavy rain may delay field access and slow northbound shipments
    • Growers will be monitoring cucumbers, chiles, onions, tomatoes, and early winter vegetable plantings
    • No immediate supply losses have been confirmed, and Sinaloa’s main winter season has not reached peak production
  • New Mexico/West Texas: Flooding has impacted the Hatch/Rincon Valley, while additional heavy rain and flood alerts remain in effect across West Texas
    • Field access and transportation are currently the primary concerns
    • No crop losses or broader produce market impacts have been confirmed
  • The earliest market impacts will most likely be logistical, including uneven arrivals, delayed loading appointments, and some spot-market pressure
  • Growers will continue monitoring quality, shelf life, and pack-outs over the next 7 to 14 days
  • Markon will continue to track grower field assessments, harvest status, and transportation conditions as more information becomes available
