FROM THE FIELDS: DOWNY MILDEW IN DESERT BROCCOLI

December 12, 2022

The Arizona/California desert growing region has experienced cool temperatures, high humidity, and even some light rain within the past several days, creating conditions that have been favorable for downy mildew to develop in some broccoli supplies. Harvesting and processing crews are working to detect and cull out product that is showing the defect, but it can’t be avoided completely.

Systemic infection has occurred, in which spores are spread from the roots up through the vascular tissue, leaving dark discoloration and streaks that can cause shortened shelf-life.

Forecasts call for similar cool, humid conditions with a chance of rain on Sunday and Monday, December 11-12 which could prolong the issue for an extended period. Not all varieties are affected the same and Markon’s Value-Added processor is allocating the best product for Markon orders, but we may need to substitute packer brand as needed for some Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) broccoli items.

Markon inspectors will continue evaluating supplies and will send an update again next week.
