FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT HEAT SPIKE

March 15, 2022

Temperatures in the Arizona/California desert growing region are spiking today and tomorrow, reaching into the upper 80°s to mid-90°s, before cooling briefly on Thursday, March 17. Although short lived, these high temperatures can spur plant growth and increase case weights, but can also cause heat stress issues in desert lettuce and baby leaf crops.

Markon inspectors have already been reporting on elevated insect pressure from previous heat spikes, as well as some growth crack, rib blight, and sun scald in lettuce crops. We are likely to see these challenges continue and may also start to see some internal burn develop.

Cold-chain management is critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life throughout the supply chain. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
