UPDATE: TOMATOES – EXTREMELY LIMITED

March 31, 2026

Tomatoes are extremely limited; demand exceeds supply. Florida’s freezing temperatures killed many acres last month; Mexican yields are also low heading into April.

Rounds

  • Florida
    • There are virtually no supplies on the market
    • Growers are expected to ship low volume by mid- to late April
  • Mexico
    • Expect extremely limited availability and strong demand
    • Vine ripe supplies are shipping, but yields are low
  • Summary
    • Supplies are extremely limited across the board
    • Flexibility will be necessary in size and variety to fill orders
    • Romas are being substituted for round tomatoes in many retail and foodservice offerings this week
    • Overall quality is average; Markon recommends quick rotations to optimize quality due to reduced shelf-life
    • Prices will continue to rise through the next few weeks
    • Supplies should increase the week of April 13, but strong demand will keep markets high until North Florida’s season starts in early May

Romas

  • Florida
    • There are virtually no supplies available
  • Mexican stocks are snug due to the recent heat wave; increased disease pressure is lowering yields
    • Medium-sized fruit is most common
    • Large and extra-large supplies are tight; prices are higher
    • Quality ranges from fair to average
    • Prices are expected to increase next week as buyers substitute Romas for round tomatoes
  • Summary
    • Supplies are limited across the board
    • Overall quality is average, at best
    • Prices will continue to rise through the next few weeks
    • Supplies should increase the week of April 13, but strong demand will keep markets high until North Florida’s season starts in early May
