Broccoli and Cauliflower

Broccoli

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Broccoli is available
  • Expect prices to remain elevated over the next 10 to 14 days
  • Yields have decreased due to cooler weather
  • Overall quality is good: pin rot is affecting some lots
  • Most growers will begin broccoli harvests in the Arizona/California desert growing regions the week of November 15

Mexican Broccoli (Crossing into South Texas)

  • Supplies are limited due to rain brought on by Hurricane Rick
  • Expect prices to climb over the next 7 to 10 days as yields continue to decrease
  • Demand for Mexican product is stronger due to low volume in other growing regions

Cauliflower

  • Markon Essentials Cauliflower is available
  • Recent cool weather has slowed growth, resulting in fewer available supplies
  • Expect good quality with great color and ideal size
  • Elevated markets are forecast for the next 10 to 14 days
  • Most growers will start cauliflower harvests in the Arizona/California desert growing regions the week of November 15

Green Beans

  • Georgia is experiencing cold evenings and rain which are reducing supplies and affecting quality
    • Occasional scarring, bruising, and discoloration is being observed
    • Extra grading is required
  • The Mexican region of Baja continues to produce steady volume; production in mainland Mexico has started and will ramp up by mid-November
  • California’s inconsistent weather will limit production in Santa Maria as the season winds down over the next 7-10 days; light harvesting will begin in the Coachella region this weekend
  • Expect prices to increase this week

Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine

  • MFC Premium Green Leaf and Romaine are available
  • MFC Premium Iceberg is sporadic; Markon Best Available is being substituted as needed due to low weights
  • Disease pressure continues to reduce yields; cool weather is slowing growth and hindering field weights
  • Overall quality is good: inconsistent texture, mildew pressure, and wind damage are being reported
  • Iceberg production is underway in Huron, California
  • Green leaf, iceberg, and romaine harvests will start in the Arizona/California desert growing region in mid-November
  • Suppliers continue to hold contract volumes to averages
  • Expect sustained active/elevated markets through the harvesting transition to the Arizona/California desert region

Strawberries

Santa Maria, California

  • Expect low volume for the next 10 days as growers recover from recent rain
  • Quality concerns include bruising, water damage, and minor wind scarring
  • Loading delays are forecast through this weekend
  • Plastic clamshells will be substituted for the corrugated packs

Oxnard, California

  • Supplies remain limited; average counts are low, but quality issues are minimal

Central Mexico

  • Production is slowly getting underway; volume will increase by mid-November

 Florida

  • Harvesting will begin in mid-December
