Cherries
Cherry season has begun in North America. Supplies will ship from various regions over the next three to four months.
California
- The season has just started; markets are elevated
- Erratic weather during the growing season has lowered yields for the upcoming season
- Expected availability over the next four to six weeks
Washington
- The season will begin on June 4
- Ideal growing conditions are producing plentiful volume and exceptional quality
- Markets will start at high levels, then decline as the season progresses
- Supplies will be available through July
Michigan
- This season is expected to start the week of July 7
- Minor frost damage has been reported in early varieties
- Prices are expected to start low to compete with Washington but rise by late July as the PNW season winds down
- Supplies will be available through August
Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine Lettuce
Green leaf prices remain steady at lower levels due to abundant supplies. Iceberg growth has slowed after recent inconsistent weather. Romaine markets are steady to slightly higher due to quality issues.
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Premium Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine are available; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted sporadically due to low weights
- Recent variable weather patterns in the Salinas Valley, including low temperatures, humid days, and rain, have resulted in uneven head development and overall lower field weights
- Iceberg and romaine weights are forecast to continue trending lower over the next two weeks
- Some iceberg fields have developed:
- Lightweight and undersized heads
- Dense heads with large frames
- Puffy heads with large frames
- Romaine quality issues persist in many lots; fog burn, internal burn, and fringe burn are reducing harvestable supplies
- Some iceberg fields have developed:
- Green leaf quality remains strong; sporadic burn issues are being avoided or trimmed at harvest points
- Expect slightly higher iceberg and romaine markets through May; green leaf will hold steady
Salinas Valley Rain and Wind
The forecast calls for scattered rainfall beginning on Monday, May 12, and a second rain event on Tuesday, May 13 with potential rainfall totals reaching a .10”. These rain events will be accompanied by strong wind gust reaching upwards of 40 MPH.
Markon inspectors will monitor field conditions and quality challenges that could develop and will continue to update with the latest.
Strawberries
Strawberry supplies are ample; the Salinas/Watsonville region received some rain yesterday, but not enough to decrease fruit quality.
Salinas/Watsonville, California
- MFC Strawberries are available
- New crop berries from Salinas are bigger with better color and flavor then Santa Maria
- Mild weather with no rain is forecast for the rest of the week
- Quality is good; light bruising due to large size, good color, and odd shape are occasional issues
- Size is large (8-12 berries) in 1-pound clamshell packs and medium (18-24 berries) in the 2-pound clamshells
- Expect markets to inch down
Oxnard/Santa Maria, California
- MFC Strawberries are available
- The forecast calls for clear, mild weather for the rest of the week
- Quality is good; some green shoulders have been reported
- Size is medium (18-24 berries per 1-pound clamshell)
- The Oxnard and Santa Maria seasons are past their peaks; volume will start to decline
- Expect markets to ease
South Georgia Cucumbers

South Georgia Squash

- Recent rain and thunderstorms had little or no impact on production
- Supplies are expected to remain available through mid-June
Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potato prices are poised to rise. Expect limited storage supplies in July and August.
Louisiana
- Yields were lower last fall following severe weather events
- Remaining storage supplies are expected to be depleted by mid-July
- New crop harvests will resume in September
Mississippi
- Storage supplies will tighten in July and August
- New crop production will begin in September
North Carolina
- Volume was lower last fall following poor weather
- Growers expect limited stocks this summer until harvests resume in September
California
- Remaining storage supplies are adequate
- Growers expect stocks to ship through the start of new crop season in mid-July
- Markets will rise in June and July as demand strengthens due to other growing regions falling short
