UPDATE: STRAWBERRIES

Rain is in the forecast for the California and Florida growing regions starting Saturday December 16 through Friday December 22. Mexican stocks will help fill shortages, but yields are not expected to meet demand. Markets will climb through the month of December.

Santa Maria/Oxnard, California

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries are available
  • Multiple rain events are forecast over next week; harvesting delays or cancelations are expected
  • Growers will rely on transfers of Mexican-grown fruit to supplement California shipments
  • Packer label will be shipped as needed; plastic clamshells will be substituted for corrugated packs
  • Quality will be challenged due to rains; concerns include excessive bruising and pin rot

Florida

  • MFC Strawberries are available
  • Multiple rain events are forecast over the weekend; harvesting delays or cancelations are expected
  • Packer label will be shipped as needed; plastic clamshells will be substituted for corrugated packs
  • Quality is good; issues include white shoulders and occasional overripening
  • Expect elevated markets and short supplies through next week

Central Mexico (Loading in South Texas)

  • Production is increasing
  • Mexican fruit will be used to supplement the California and Florida shortages next week
  • The industry will be in a demand-exceeds-supply situation
  • Quality is good; white shoulders and occasional overripening are issues
