UPDATE: STRAWBERRIES

Harvesting has been canceled for Monday, February 16 through Wednesday, February 18 due to persistent rain in California’s Santa Maria and Oxnard growing regions. Expect tight supplies and strong markets through next week.

 

Santa Maria/ Oxnard

  • These regions are expected to receive over 2.5 inches of rain in the next 72 hours
  • Most growers have canceled harvests for today through Wednesday; fruit will be transferred from Mexico to fill orders
  • Expect a demand-exceeds-supply market for the next week
  • Quality is good; rain will cause further damage, including white shoulders, bruising, and mildew
  • Maintaining the cold chain will be vital for shelf-life; Markon recommends ordering for quick turns
  • Expect strong demand and elevated markets through next week

Florida

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries are available
  • Season is beginning to reach its peak as harvest increases weekly
  • Berries range from small-medium to medium in size (15-18 per one-pound clamshell)
  • Quality is good; small size, light color, and misshapen berries have been reported
  • Expect a weakening market post Valentine’s Day pull

Mexico (into South Texas)

  • The season is at its peak; yields are high
  • Expect tight supplies as Mexico will help fill the void from California shortages
  • Size currently ranges from medium to large (14-22 berries per one-pound clamshell)
  • Quality is good; small size, white shoulders, and misshapen berries have been reported
  • Expect strong demand and elevated markets through next week
