The growing regions of Santa Maria and Oxnard, California are forecast to receive rain this weekend. Suppliers will harvest ahead of the rain on Saturday, March 1 to avoid shipping any damaged berries on Monday, March 3. Expect markets to remain at current levels through the middle of next week and then inch down as supplies increase.
Santa Maria
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Strawberries are available
- Size currently ranges from 12-16 berries per 1-pound clamshell
- Quality is good; coloring is improving daily
- White shoulders have been an issue
Oxnard
- MFC Strawberries are available
- The season is at its peak and will wind down through mid-April
- Volume is average
- Size currently ranges from 10-16 berries per 1-pound clamshell
- Quality is good; color is deep red color and flavor is sweet
Mexico (into South Texas)
- Peak season has passed, but fields continue to produce high numbers
- Size currently ranges from 16-24 berries per 1-pound clamshell
- Quality is good; uneven ripening and light bruising have been reported
- The season will run through mid-March
Florida
- MFC Strawberries are available
- Supplies have increased; the season will run through mid-March
- Size currently ranges from 12-16 berries per 1-pound clamshell
- Quality is good; some misshaped berries have been reported due to January’s cold snap
