Negotiations between East Coast and Gulf Coast port workers and management have been strained for months over a contract renewal that expires on September 30, 2024. It has been reported that talks have completely broken down between both sides which could result in a possible strike by the 45,000 dock workers.
- A possible port worker strike would begin at midnight on October 1, affecting workers from Maine to Texas
- Note that one strike day causes a four to six-day delay to unload each vessel
- Port management does have an emergency team on standby to handle perishables in case of a strike, but significant delays will still occur
- A strike would put a strain on perishable agricultural products, especially lemons, oranges, pineapples, bananas, and limes
