Fresh-run Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions are available in Northern California and New Mexico. New crop onion harvests have started in Washington, with Idaho and Oregon to start over the next two to three weeks.
California
- Northern California’s onion season is expected to end the second to third week of August
- Remaining stocks are dominated by medium and jumbo sizes; colossal and super colossal sizes are limited
- White onions are tightening as the season wraps up
- Quality is good; fresh-run onions will exhibit higher moisture content, thinner skins, and overall shorter shelf life
- Expect slightly lower prices over the next 7-10 days
New Mexico
- New Mexico fresh-run onion season is expected to end by the second week of August
- Stocks are dominated by medium and jumbo sizes; colossal and super colossal sizes are limited
- Quality is good; fresh-run onions will exhibit higher moisture content, thinner skins, and overall shorter shelf life
- Expect slightly lower prices for red and yellow medium sizes; larger sizes are tight, commanding higher prices
Washington
- New crop red and yellow onion production has begun in a limited manner; white onion harvests will start in the next 7-10 days
- Stocks are dominated by medium and jumbo sizes
- Colossal and super colossal sizes are limited but will increase as the season continues
- Washington and Oregon wildfire smoke is impacting plant growth, leading to immature/smaller onions
- Quality is good; fresh-run onions will exhibit higher moisture content, thinner skins, and overall shorter shelf life
- Initial FOB prices are comparable to those from California’s San Joaquin Valley
Idaho/Oregon
- The Idaho/Oregon fresh-run onion season will begin in a limited manner in two to three weeks
- Sizing will be dominated by medium and jumbo supplies
- Expect tight colossal and super colossal sizes at the start of the season
- Washington and Oregon wildfire smoke is impacting plant growth, leading to immature smaller onions
- Expect opening prices to be comparable to California FOBs, then inch down as more growers begin production
Utah
- New crop harvests will begin in a limited manner the first week of September
