UPDATE: ONIONS

The Northwest onion season has begun in a limited manner. Production is starting to wind down in California and New Mexico. Prices are steady.

Washington

  • Markon First Crop (MFC) Onions are available
  • Washington has begun shipping red and yellow onions; white onions will enter the market in one to two weeks
  • All sizes are available
  • Quality ranges from good to excellent
    • Fresh-run onions will have thinner skins, making them more prone to mechanical damage
    • Skins will thicken as the season progresses and onions have properly cured
  • Expect slightly lower prices once more growers begin harvesting

Idaho/Oregon

  • MFC Onions will enter the market the week of August 11
  • The Idaho and Oregon fresh-run onion season will begin in a limited manner next week
  • Growers anticipate a strong start to the season due to favorable growing weather this summer
  • Initial harvests will be dominated by jumbo and colossal sizes
  • Quality will range from good to excellent
    • Fresh-run onions will have thinner skins, making them more prone to mechanical damage
    • Skins will thicken as the season progresses and onions have properly cured

Utah/Colorado

  • Utah will begin harvesting fresh-run onions the week of August 11
  • Colorado’s fresh-run onion season will begin the week of August 18
  • Quality will range from good to excellent

California

  • MFC Onions are limited
  • Northern California’s fresh-run onion season is winding down; most growers will end production by mid-August
  • Supplies of all sizes are available; medium yellows are limited
  • Quality is good on remaining supplies; fresh-run onions will have thinner skins, making them more susceptible to mechanical damage
  • Prices are steady as the season begins to wind down

New Mexico

  • MFC Onions are available
  • Fresh-run onions will be available through the week of August 18 barring any unforeseen weather events
  • Supplies of all sizes are available; medium yellows are limited
  • Quality is good on remaining supplies; fresh-run onions will have thinner skins, making them more susceptible to mechanical damage
  • Expect steady pricing over the next two weeks as the season winds down and other growing regions start production
