Central American cantaloupe and honeydew supplies are limited; markets are elevated.
Cantaloupes
- Imported supplies are now arriving into domestic ports from Guatemala, Honduras, and Costa Rica
- Central American yields are lower than expected due to October’s cool, wet weather
- Quality is good in all current growing regions; bruising, green casts, and soft fruit are occasional issues
- Guatemalan supplies are dominated by 9- and 9-count jumbo sizes
- Honduran and Costa Rican new crop stocks are smaller; 12- and 15-count sizes dominate yields
- Expect steady markets for the next 7-10 days
Honeydews
- Imported shipments are now coming out of Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico
- Quality ranges from good to fair; ground spotting, bruising, and soft fruit are occasional issues
- Supplies are dominated by jumbo and regular 5- and 6-count sizes
- Smaller 8- and 9-count size melons remain limited, but have increased slightly over the last week
- Markon may recommend substituting with larger melons to avoid potential gaps in supply
- Expect limited supplies and elevated markets to persist for the next two to three weeks
