UPDATE: HURRICANE KAY

September 7, 2022

Hurricane Kay grew into a Category Two Hurricane on Tuesday evening, working its way north towards the western coastline of the Baja Peninsula in Mexico. Growers are bracing themselves for the next 48 to 72 hours as heavy rain and wind are expected in the region. Logistics and the supply chain may be affected as well.

The current hurricane trajectory has several crops along its path. Heavy rain, strong winds, and potential flooding may impact the following commodities:

  • Asparagus
  • Bell Peppers (light/late summer season)
  • Chiles
  • Cucumbers
  • Green Beans
  • Squash
  • Tomatoes

Expect prices for produce crossing through Otay Mesa, California to increase this week.
