Just off Mexico’s Pacific Coast, this storm rapidly intensified from a Tropical Storm to a Hurricane yesterday and is expected to bring heavy rains to the Baja Peninsula and Southern California this weekend. The storm will weaken to a depression by the time it makes landfall Sunday, August 20, bringing heavy rainfall, strong winds, and flooding to key growing areas Monday, August 21 and Tuesday, August 22.
The storm will negatively impact quality and slow production; harvesting will be curtailed due to wet fields. Long-term damage is also a concern for new/young plantings; growers will assess potential long-term impacts once fields dry out. As a result, markets for the below commodities are expected to rise:
- Asparagus
- Bell Peppers
- Cucumbers
- Cilantro/Parsley
- Chile Peppers
- Eggplant
- Green Onions
- Squash
- Tomatoes
- Strawberries
