The green onion market continues to rise. Persistent heat was already driving down yields preceding Hurricane Hilary’s passing over the primary growing regions on the Baja peninsula of Mexico.
- The full extent of damage done by high winds and heavy rainfall is still being assessed by regional authorities and Markon’s grower partners
- At least some fields were completely lost due to rain and wind damage
- Power is still widely unavailable across the region, preventing packing of any harvestable product at this time
- Supplies will be limited for the back half of the week as harvests are cancelled due to flooded fields and blocked transportation routes
- Expecting first supplies to begin to arrive late Wednesday evening for Thursday shipping, early week orders were covered by packing ahead of time to beat the storm
- Industry wide supplies will favor the smaller side for the following one to two weeks; with very few to no ‘Longtop’ green onions available by the end this week
- Expect elevated markets to persist for the next three to four weeks, at minimum
