Iceberg markets continue to rise as disease pressure, insect activity, and reduced yields tighten supplies while demand strengthens. Green leaf and romaine markets are inching up and expected to continue trending higher due to lower yields and increased demand.
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Green Leaf, Iceberg, and Romaine Lettuces are available in Salinas, California; Markon Best Available (MBA) is being substituted as necessary
- Industry-wide iceberg weights and yields are reduced compared to prior weeks; packer label carton weights are being reported as light as 30 pounds this week
- Disease challenges, including Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus (INSV) and Sclerotinia, are becoming more widespread and reducing yields
- Salinas, California quality ranges from fair to good; increased pest pressure, fog/internal burn, mildew, and seeder are being reported in many lots
- Colorado and Eastern Canada/USA regional seasons are also battling reduced quality following rain and warm temperatures
- Expect continued rising markets for the next two weeks at minimum, until industry weights and yields begin to improve
- Markon QA inspectors continue to work closely with grower-shipper partners to secure the best available lots
