Reduced winter plantings in Salinas Valley and California Central Coast are resulting in tight supplies.

  • Nighttime lows in the 40s and daytime highs in 60s have prevented heads from reaching full size potential, resulting in more heads packed per case over lower overall yields
  • High acreage and labor costs, as well as the opportunity to grow multiple crops in a season, further discourage California growers from planting cabbage
  • Red Cabbage is being grown almost exclusively by the processors for value-added items
  • Expect reduced supplies and elevated prices throughout the month of May
