Although ideal weather is forecast for Florida over the next 10 days, recent freezing temperatures damaged many crops, pushing up current prices.
Broccoli
- Low temperatures have slowed maturity; fields are roughly two to three weeks behind growth projections
- No long-term effects are expected
Cabbage
- Growers report minimal crop loss in North Florida
- Lower yields are expected in April as young plantings did experience freezing weather
Bell Peppers
- Post-freeze quality is good
- Several growers report total crop loss as they were not able to cover plants
- Weak demand is keeping markets steady
Celery
- No freeze damage has been reported, but overall maturity has slowed drastically
- Limited supplies will persist this week
- Volume is expected to increase next week
- No long-term effects are anticipated as of now
Lettuce
- Lettuce fields have fared better than expected following the cold snap
- Lower weights forecast for the near-term; long-term effects will be minimal
Strawberries
- Supplies remain limited, but warmer weather will help crops bounce back as quickly as next week
- Markon First Crop Strawberries are available from Florida
Squash
- Growers report significant losses
- Although some of the crops will rebound, an increased amount of off-grade fruit is anticipated
Tomatoes
- Homestead growers are reporting that the tops of many plants were burned, but that the middle and bottom of the plants are harvestable
- Although Immokalee is reporting total crop loss, some growers were able to cover crops to prevent freeze damage
