UPDATE: COLD FLORIDA WEATHER

Florida is currently experiencing abnormally cold temperatures and is expected to see even colder temperatures this upcoming weekend. Freezing temperatures in the state could have a significant impact on the current plantings that will be harvested in the spring. The cold temperatures are expected to continue through Wednesday February 4, which at minimum will slow plant maturity and push up markets.

Florida

  • North Florida is currently seeing low temperatures around 30 degrees and daily high’s in the 50’s, with no major concerns; crops in this area can handle cold weather
  • The forecast is calling for freezing temperatures Sunday, February 1 and Monday, February 2 down into low 20’s which has many growers concerned
    • These low temperatures could affect immature crop plants and delay mature crops
      • Cabbage
      • Broccoli
      • Colored potatoes
  • Central/Western Florida (Tampa region) experienced freezing temperatures this morning of 32 degrees with today’s high in the mid 50’s
    • Freezing and near freezing temperatures expected to last multiple mornings through Monday, February 2
    • Crops growing in this part of the state include:
      • Cabbage
      • Broccoli
      • Strawberries
  • Southern Florida (Immokalee, Ft Pierce, Belle Glade, LaBelle) will see temperature to low 30’s with high temperatures in the 60’s
    • Growers are keeping an eye on early morning freezes. Temperatures expected this weekend into Monday morning, February 2
    • Crops growing in this part of the state include:
      • Bell Peppers
      • Celery
      • Citrus
      • Corn
      • Cucumber
      • Green Beans
      • Lettuces
      • Radishes
      • Squash
      • Tomatoes
      • Watermelon
  • These abnormally low temperatures for the state will slow maturity and push prices higher.
