Markets are seeing slight relief this week as a result of improved weather and softened demand, but supplies remain limited as we near the end of the Salinas season. Markon Essentials (ESS) Cauliflower is limited; packer label is being substituted as necessary.
Salinas and Santa Maria, California
- Yields are slowly rebounding as weather and growing conditions improve; quality is fairly good
- Fewer instances of discoloration, brown bead, mold, and mildew are being reported
- Insect damage, from Diamondback moth pupa/larvae, is a decreasing issue due to cooler weather
- Inconsistent sizing and small sized heads are being reported is most lots
- Despite softened pricing, expect supplies to remain light until the Arizona/California desert season begins in early to mid-November
East Coast/Midwest/Canada
- Markets are elevated as demand is still strong
- Maine supplies are decreasing as the region wraps up for the season in November; Indiana is tight as well
- Supplies out of North and South Carolina will support the market until Florida and Georgia begin in the late fall/early winter
- Prices will remain fairly elevated as production shifts further south these next two to three weeks
