Broccoli and cauliflower markets continue to ease as post-holiday demand remains subdued and summer production expands across East Coast growing regions. Markon First Crop (MFC) Broccoli is available in Salinas, California. Markon Essentials (ESS) Cauliflower is on the market.
Broccoli
- The Maine season is getting underway, helping meet regional demand and reducing reliance on California and Mexican supplies (into South Texas).
- Mexican quality ranges from below-average to poor
- Reported defects include cat-eye, browning, and widespread hollow core
- Minimal stem rot is being observed
- California quality ranges from average to good; occasional discoloration and mechanical damage are being reported
- Markets are expected to continue declining as East Coast production increases and overall supply increases
Cauliflower
- Salinas and Santa Maria supplies have increased
- Size continues to trend smaller, with 12- and 16-count cartons accounting for the majority of availability
- Quality varies by region
- Santa Maria quality is excellent
- Salinas growers report occasional bruising and discoloration
- Prices will weaken as production ramps up across all growing regions
