Although markets are softening due to increased supplies in several growing regions, prices will inch back up as the Salinas season ends.
California
- Markon Best Available (MBA) Broccoli is limited in California’s Salinas Valley; packer label is being substituted as necessary
- Supplies are increasing in the Salinas, Santa Maria, and Lompoc Valleys
- Cool mornings coupled with warmer afternoons have improved yields, but moisture and heat may prolong pin rot issues
- Quality is fairly good
- Pin rot varies from light to heavy depending on the field
- Brown bead, hollow core, and occasional decay are also being noted
- Diamondback moth and aphid pressure are declining in fields where temperatures are lower
- Expect prices to soften, but remain relatively high until the Arizona/California desert season begins in early to mid-November
Mexico
- Mexican-grown MBA Broccoli continues to ship into South Texas
- Markets are trending lower as supplies ramp up for the winter season
- Weather is favorable for growth; minimal precipitation is forecast for the next few weeks
- Quality ranges from fair to good; hollow core, mechanical damage, and some purple cast are present
- Expect markets to continue easing through November
East Coast/Midwest/Canada
- Prices are easing as supplies ramp up and quality improves
- Production will wind down in Maine and Canada over the next two weeks; Indiana stocks are tightening as well
- Supplies out of North and South Carolina will support the market until Florida and Georgia growers begin harvesting in the late fall/early winter
- Prices will continue to soften as the southernmost growing seasons progress
