Prices are inching higher as jumbo and extra-large sizes remain extremely limited in Mexico.
Mexico
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus is available out of Baja; packer label is being substituted where necessary
- Expect tight jumbo and extra-large sizes through December due to aging crowns (root systems) producing smaller spears; relief is expected by late January once new growing regions start harvesting
- Overall size distribution remains heavily skewed towards small and standard-sized spears
- Quality is mixed; undersized and dehydrated spears have been reported, as well as spreading/seeding tips
- Cooler, wet weather is expected into next week across Baja, which may slow growth
- Expect climbing prices with limited availability of jumbo and extra-large sizes to persist as growing regions transition
Peru
- Supplies are plentiful
- Size distribution is skewed towards small and standard sizes; larger sizes remain limited
- Quality ranges from good to above average; spears are firm with minimal spreading/seeding
- Expect pricing to track upwards alongside Mexican markets through December
