Markets remain active; jumbo and extra-large sizes are extremely limited out of Mexico.
Mexico
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus is limited out of Baja, Mexico; packer label is being substituted
- Last weekend’s tropical storms brought heavy rains and wind to growing regions in Baja and Sonora, Mexico
- Jumbo and extra-large sizes are especially tight as mature fields in Baja were forced to close for the season due to the weather conditions
- Newer fields starting production in Sonora were delayed due to heavy rainfall, further reducing volume crossing over the border
- Quality ranges from fair to average; undersized and wrinkling spears have been reported, as well as spreading/seeding tips
- Expect higher pricing and lower availability, especially of jumbo sizes, over the next 10-14 days
Peru
- Peruvian stocks continue to normalize following recent supply disruptions caused by the breakdown of an ocean vessel leaving port
- Size distribution is slightly better from Peru, however strong demand has limited open market supplies
- Quality is good from new fields beginning production in Northern Peru; spears have firm tips and minimal spreading/seeding
- Expect elevated markets over the next 10-14 days
