Prices continue to rise amid poor weather that is interrupting production in Mexico and Peru.
Mexico
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus is available out of Baja, Mexico
- Hurricane Priscilla is strengthening off the Pacific Coast of Baja, bringing additional rainfall to fields whose yields were already reduced by previous tropical storms
- Potentially heavy rains mid-week will reduce volume from newer fields in Baja and force older fields to close, reducing overall supplies out of Mexico
- New harvesting in Sonora, Mexico may also be affected by the incoming storm
- Quality is average; some wrinkling spears and spreading/seeding tips have been reported
- Expect higher pricing and lower availability over the next 7-10 days
Peru
- Supply levels continue to normalize after an ocean vessel experienced a mechanical breakdown two weeks ago, resulting in many ocean containers being left behind; supplies then had to fly product into ports
- Expensive air-freighted asparagus and older container stocks are currently entering the market, contributing to lower overall port crossings and higher prices
- Quality is great; spears have firm tips and minimal spreading/seeding
- Expect lower overall volume and higher pricing over the next 7-10 days
