Prices are increasing amid supply interruptions in Mexico and Peru.
Mexico
- Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus is available out of Baja, Mexico
- Rainfall from tropical storm systems affected several growing regions and caused interstate closures in Southern Baja
- Rains have lowered yields in newer fields and forced the closure of older fields, decreasing harvest volume out of the Baja Peninsula
- New fields are beginning to harvest in Sonora, Mexico, bringing added availability to the market in the coming weeks (weather permitting)
- Quality has been good; some wrinkling spears and spreading/seeding tips have been seen in older fields
- Expect higher pricing and lower availability going into next week
Peru
- Vessel delays this week will result in less containers arriving at U.S. ports into next week, temporarily constraining Peruvian supply
- Southern Peru is past peak production and will finish harvests by late October/early November
- Cooler weather in Northern Peru is slowing growth in newer fields that are scheduled to take us into the November holiday pull
- Quality is excellent out of Southern Peru; spears have firm tips and minimal spreading/seeding
