UPDATE: ASPARAGUS

January 8, 2024

Prices will continue rising this week. Extra-large and jumbo asparagus remains extremely scarce; cold weather is severely limiting production. Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus is sporadic; packer label is being shipped as necessary.

Mexico

  • Limited quantities are being harvested in Northern Baja, Sonora, and Mexicali
  • Smaller-diameter (standard and large size) stalks dominate yields
  • Continued cool weather is hindering plant maturation
    • Younger plantings are being stunted by rain
    • This week’s low temperatures will further deplete yields if stalks freeze
  • Allowing for size substitutions is recommended to ensure orders are filled over the next two to three weeks
  • Expect supplies to increase and prices to ease slightly by late January

Peru

  • Minimal volume is being imported into Miami, Florida
  • FOB costs remain comparable from both regions; some freight savings are available for Eastern DCs
  • Expect high prices and extremely tight supplies into early February
