UPDATE: ASPARAGUS

December 15, 2023

Supplies are extremely limited; prices will continue climbing. Peruvian imports (shipping into Florida) are tight. Demand for Mexican supplies has increased as growers transition to Northern Baja, Mexico. Packer label is being substituted to fill orders when supplies do not meet Markon First Crop (MFC) Asparagus specifications.

Mexico

  • Limited quantities are being harvested in Baja and Sonora; many growers shut down fields earlier than normal due to weak markets in early December
  • Size is dominated by small-diameter stalks as new fields are being harvested
    • Cooler weather and shorter days have hindered maturation
    • Large and jumbo sizes are even tighter than in previous weeks
  • Quality has diminished; feathery tips and inconsistent size are being reported

Peru

  • Production is focused in Northern Peru after temperatures in the south rose quickly and yields declined; volume remains low
  • FOB costs remain comparable from both regions; though some freight savings are available for Eastern DCs
  • Expect high prices and very tight supplies into early February
