Please click here to view a Markon Live from the Fields video regarding the seasonal transition from the desert growing region, north to Salinas, Huron, and other key areas in California.
- The Arizona/California desert region is in its final three weeks of production for broccoli, cauliflower, and leafy greens crops
- Recent record heat and strong winds are causing a decline in quality and shelf-life
- Supplies remain ample
- Production is ramping up in the Huron, Salinas, and Santa Maria, California regions
- Salinas weather has been favorable, but intermittent showers over the next several days will cause some muddy conditions and potential quality challenges
- Minimal soil disease issues, such as anthracnose and sclerotinia are present, but not nearly as concerning during this period last year
- Huron supplies are exhibiting good overall quality, but insect pressure is a challenge, particularly in leaf lettuce
- By the week of April 14, the bulk of Markon orders for commodity and value-added broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, and tender leaf items will be loading out of Salinas
- Markon inspectors are monitoring quality and field conditions in all key regions and will update further as needed
