FROM THE FIELDS: YUMA, ARIZONA LETTUCE UPDATE

November 4, 2025

A few growers have transitioned production to the desert growing region in Yuma, Arizona; additional suppliers will begin harvests by mid-week. The first Markon inspector followed the transition, and is already walking the first iceberg and romaine fields of the season.

Below are the initial observations:

  • Early quality is good; however, size and weight remain challenges
  • Average 24-count pack weights are
    • Iceberg 34-36 lb.
    • Romaine 33-36 lb.
    • Markon First Crop (MFC) weight specifications will not be met at first, but heads will increase as almost perfect growing conditions are forecast
  • The following defects are being seen, but are limited:
    • Iceberg
      • Rib blight
      • Ribby and odd shape
      • Seeder/long core
      • Sun-scalding
    • Iceberg & Romaine
      • Bottom rot
    • Romaine
      • Tip-burn

Markon inspectors will continue to assess fields and report back with an additional outlook as growers make a full transition to the Arizona-California desert region.
