Light rain began falling early this morning in the Salinas Valley and other West Coast growing regions such as Santa Maria and Oxnard. Up to a quarter inch of rain in the Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys, and possibly a third of an inch in Santa Maria and Oxnard are expected. Growers packed most orders ahead yesterday and will work to keep boxes as clean and dry as possible for field-packed items.
Showers may continue off and on through the afternoon with clear conditions returning tomorrow, September 25. Production and loading delays are to be expected today and possibly tomorrow pending rainfall totals.
Some rain-related challenges that may develop include, but are not limited to:
- Bottom rot/decay in lettuce crops
- Bruising, soft texture, and pin rot/decay in strawberries
- Dirt/mud in field-packed items
- Increased mildew pressure
- Pin rot in broccoli
- Premature pinking in commodity and value-added lettuce packs
- Shortened shelf-life potential
Markon inspectors will be monitoring supplies and will update further as needed. As always, cold chain management throughout the supply chain is critical for maximizing the quality and shelf-life of perishable produce items.
