California’s Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys are experiencing light showers this morning, with up to a half-inch of rain estimated for each area. Growers have been packing orders ahead to ensure order fulfillment, and harvesting crews will be taking measures to keep boxes and product as clean and dry as possible. Despite their efforts, varying levels of dirt/mud may be present over the next couple of days. Production and loading delays are possible.
Lettuce and other row crop vegetables have already been significantly impacted by weather, disease pressure, and other end-of-season factors. These challenges will persist through the rest of the Salinas and Santa Maria seasons.
A small number of suppliers have already started harvesting in the Arizona/California desert region and will continue ramping up production over the coming days. Quality is very good in the desert area, but inconsistent size and low case weights can be expected through the end of November.
