Weather forecasts are calling for a low-pressure system to bring intermittent showers to West Coast growing regions such as Salinas, Santa Maria, San Joaquin Valley, and Oxnard, starting Tuesday evening, September 23, continuing into Wednesday, September 24. Anywhere from .10”-.20” may be recorded in the Salinas and San Joaquin Valleys, and up to a half inch is possible in the Santa Maria and Oxnard regions.
Markon is currently working with suppliers to arrange packing orders ahead of the rain to ensure full coverage in the event of harvest disruptions or cancellations following the rain. In addition, harvesting crews will be taking measures to keep boxes as clean and dry as possible.
Some rain-related challenges that may develop include, but are not limited to:
- Bottom rot/decay in lettuce crops
- Bruising, soft texture, and pin rot/decay in strawberries
- Dirt/mud in field-packed items
- Increased mildew pressure
- Pin rot in broccoli
- Premature pinking in commodity and value-added lettuce packs
- Shortened shelf-life potential
Markon inspectors will be monitoring supplies and will update further as needed. As always, cold chain management throughout the supply chain is critical for maximizing the quality and shelf-life of perishable produce items.
