FROM THE FIELDS: WEST COAST & DESERT RAIN

November 11, 2025

A slow-moving low-pressure system will bring light-to-moderate showers to most West Coast growing regions, as well as the Arizona/California desert growing region, this week. Growers are currently packing orders ahead in anticipation of the rain and will work to keep boxes and product as clean and dry as possible during and after the storm.

Salinas/Santa Maria, California

  • Showers will begin on Wednesday and continue into Friday
  • Up to two inches of rain are forecast
  • Significant production and loading delays and possible cancellations may occur
  • Lettuce and leaf items are essentially done in these regions, but other crops such as broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and celery remain available for a few more weeks
  • Strawberries in Santa Maria will be the most susceptible to rain-related quality challenges and yield loss in the coming days

Huron, California

  • Showers will begin on Wednesday and continue into Friday
  • Up to an inch of rain is possible in this region
  • Some production and loading delays can be expected through the end of the week
  • The Huron lettuce/leaf season will be over by early next week, so any rain-related challenges would be short-lived

Arizona/California Desert Region

  • Rain will arrive in the desert region late Thursday and persist into Friday
  • A total of .25”-.50” of rain is possible, but most will be concentrated in Coachella and Imperial Valley
  • Desert lettuce/leaf production is ramping up
  • The light amount of rain could be enough to cause production delays and potentially cause quality and shelf-life challenges, but may also promote plant growth in fields that have stalled in recent days

Markon inspectors are monitoring conditions in all major growing regions and will update further as the situation dictates.
