FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS VALLEY RAIN

May 28, 2026

California’s Salinas Valley is experiencing showers this morning with upwards of a .5” total rainfall expected by the end of today. Some shippers are reporting harvesting delays and others have canceled today’s harvest. Rain-related quality and shelf-life challenges for both commodity and value‑added items that may develop include, but are not limited to:

  • Bottom rot
  • Mildew pressure
  • Pin rot in broccoli
  • Premature pinking/shortened shelf life
  • Rain damage in strawberries

Markon inspectors are actively monitoring field and product conditions and will update further as needed. Ordering for quick turns is recommended, and as always, cold-chain management throughout the supply chain is critical for maximizing quality and shelf-life.
