FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS VALLEY HEAT SPIKE

August 26, 2021

Weather forecasts for California’s Salinas Valley are calling for a return of higher temperatures starting today, August 26 through this weekend. The region will experience upper 70s to low 90s, and triple-digit temperatures in the Southern end of the Salinas Valley. Markon brand suppliers will start their harvesting earlier than normal tomorrow through this Monday, August 30, to avoid peak temperatures and ensure personnel are following SOPs for cut-to-cool times.

Temperatures will ease by the middle of next week before warming again the week of Labor Day. Markon inspectors are monitoring supplies closely and working with growers and processors to secure the best product for Markon orders. Lettuce and baby leaf items such as arugula and spring mix can be particularly susceptible to heat stress and/or reduced shelf-life.
