FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS HEAD LETTUCE QUALITY

August 12, 2021

California’s Salinas Valley has been experiencing foggy mornings, overcast days, high humidity, and warm afternoons over the past two weeks. These climatic conditions are causing quality challenges, including:

  • Increased insect pressure (aphids)
  • Mildew
  • Long core/seeder

Harvesting crews are working diligently to reduce and/or eliminate as much of the defects as possible. Due to these quality challenges and the extra trimming needed, Markon First Crop Iceberg and Romaine Lettuces will be sporadically available over the next 10 days; Markon Best Available being substituted as needed.

The current weather forecast calls for coastal temperatures to remain seasonable, with foggy mornings and sunny afternoons.

Markon inspectors will be monitoring quality and weather conditions closely and will update further as needed.
