FROM THE FIELDS: SALINAS AND SANTA MARIA VALLEY PEST PRESSURE

August 12, 2025

Markon First Crop (MFC) Asian-Cut Broccoli Crowns are limited in the Salinas Valley; Markon Best Available (MBA) Broccoli is being substituted as needed. Markon Essentials (ESS) Cauliflower is available. All Ready-Set-Serve (RSS) Broccoli and Cauliflower packs are available and being monitored closely.

Growers of cole crops such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower have seen varying levels of diamondback moth pressure over the past few months in California’s Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys. Farms located in the warmer portions of these valleys have had a higher percentage of diamondback moths, in various stages of their life cycle, but Markon inspectors have recently started finding activity in all areas.

These pests have been difficult to manage over the past few years, particularly in the late summer/early fall months, when temperatures rise and provide ideal conditions for their propagation. Growers have limited options at their disposal to treat diamondback moth and larvae, as the moth and larvae have developed resistance to many approved insecticides and there are strict regulations on maximum residue limits (MRLs) for broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower plants.

When diamondback moth larvae hatch, they feed on the leaves and stems, then pupate on the underside of the crowns, between the florets, or other hard-to-reach areas, before emerging as adult moths. This makes them extremely difficult for insecticides to reach, as well as for harvesting and processing crews to detect and avoid.

With another warm spell upon us this week and peak seasonal temperatures still ahead, inspectors expect this pest to continue posing a consistent challenge until the end of the Salinas season in mid-November. In addition, other insects such as aphids and thrips are on the rise in cole and lettuce crops throughout the Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys. Markon inspectors are working closely with growers to secure the best product for Markon commodity and value-added orders.
