FROM THE FIELDS: MEXICAN & EAST COAST BROCCOLI

August 14, 2025

Markon First Crop (MFC) Asian-Cut Broccoli Crowns are limited in Central Mexico; Markon Best Available (MBA) Broccoli is being substituted as needed.

In the update below, Markon inspectors reported insect challenges in the broccoli crops of the Salinas and Santa Maria Valleys, which are forecast to persist over the next few months. Although Mexican broccoli supplies are currently showing significantly less insect pressure, other weather and varietal challenges will still be present, which harvesting crews cannot avoid.

Central Mexico

  • Supplies are currently exhibiting challenges that include, but are not limited to:
    • Cat Eye
      • A condition characterized by the appearance of premature yellow flowers or yellow spots on broccoli florets
      • This is caused by heat stress, insufficient sunlight, or fluctuating temperatures during the growing cycle
      • As much as 60% of some varieties are exhibiting Cat Eye symptoms
      • Different varieties that will be harvested in September are typically less susceptible to Cat Eye
    • Hollow Core
      • Hollow or empty space in broccoli branches
      • Brought on by rapid growth
    • Sporadic insect pressure

East Coast

  • Quality is exceptional but supplies are limited
    • Erratic temperatures have slowed growth in recent weeks
    • Temperatures will return to seasonal norms in the coming days, which will help stimulate growth rates and increase supplies
    • Although East Coast growers sometimes face the same pest concerns as West Coast growers, current supplies are not being impacted by insects
