FROM THE FIELDS: LETTUCE ICE IN THE DESERT REGION

December 12, 2022

Lettuce shippers in the Arizona/California desert growing region are experiencing sporadic lettuce ice this morning. Harvesting delays of up to three hours are being reported, which will create loading delays tonight.

The forecast calls for similar conditions through the weekend with a small chance for rain Monday evening, December 12. Much colder morning temperatures are forecast for early next week with widespread moderate-to-heavy lettuce ice. At this point, the desert region has already received several light-to-moderate ice events and Markon inspectors are now seeing some of the effects, such as epidermal blister and epidermal peel in romaine lettuce. This can be expected to continue and likely worsen with more ice on the way.
