FROM THE FIELDS: INSECT PRESSURE IN VARIOUS WEST COAST CROPS

June 20, 2025

Markon inspectors have recently observed an uptick in the presence of all stages of diamondback moths in current and upcoming commodity and value-added cole crop items, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and cauliflower. Broccoli and cabbage have been the most impacted so far. When larvae hatch, they feed on the leaves and stems, then pupate on the underside of the crowns and between the florets, before emerging as adult moths.

These pests thrive in warmer temperatures, which some parts of the Salinas Valley have experienced in recent weeks (see chart below). Growers are taking steps to mitigate and are allocating their best lots for Markon orders, but once established, they can be difficult for harvesting crews to detect/avoid, and are not easily dislodged in the wash process. Although it is not widespread, this is expected to be a hit-and-miss issue for at least the next few weeks. It will be important to inspect the above-mentioned items thoroughly upon arrival.
