FROM THE FIELDS: ICEBERG QUALITY CONCERNS

October 29, 2021

The rainfall experienced in California lettuce growing regions Monday, October 25, is causing concerns about premature pinking in both commodity and value-added iceberg products.

Over an inch and a half of rain, followed by higher-than-average temperatures earlier this week are expected to cause premature pinking issues and shorten shelf-life due to excess nitrogen uptake from the precipitation.

Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to pack the best available product.
