FROM THE FIELDS: ERRATIC DESERT WEATHER

February 16, 2022

The Arizona/California desert region continues to experience erratic weather with cycles of heat followed by strong winds, and freezing morning temperatures. The latest heat spike brought daytime highs into the upper 80°s-to low 90°s, but after another round of high winds yesterday, the forecast calls for another cooling trend with the potential for more lettuce ice Thursday through Saturday, February 17-19.

Due to the temperature fluctuations throughout this month (see chart below), we expect to continue seeing varying amounts of freeze-related defects such as epidermal blister and peel, as well as some heat-related defects, such as internal burn, sun scald, and weak tip. Shelf-life for commodity and value-added items may be impacted as well.
