Weather forecasts for the Arizona/California desert growing region have been updated multiple times over the last few days. What was projected to be minimal showers yesterday turned into .20” – .40” of rain and thunderstorms that caused some growers to cancel harvest operations. It’s possible that the region may receive light rain again today and tomorrow before a more significant system arrives Friday through Saturday, November 21-22, bringing an additional .40” in Coachella/Imperial Valley and 1.00” to the Yuma region.
Expect production and loading delays to continue into early next week with rain-related challenges that will impact quality and shelf-life in commodity and value-added desert row crop items for the next 2-3 weeks. These challenges included, but are not limited to:
- Bottom rot
- Elevated dirt/mud
- Increased mildew pressure
- Pin rot in broccoli
- Premature pinking in commodity and value-added items
- Rib blight
- Shortened shelf-life potential
