FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION WEATHER UPDATE

December 20, 2021

The Arizona/California desert growing region is experiencing light lettuce ice this morning; suppliers are delaying harvesting one to two hours. After recent ice events, Markon inspectors are now noticing light epidermal blisters developing on lettuce items (see attached photos).

The forecast calling for overcast conditions over the next few days and a chance for rain in the Yuma and Coachella areas on Thursday, December 23. The threat of ice for the remainder of this week has diminished, but some labor and production challenges could still develop depending on total rainfall. Markon inspectors will monitor the forecast and crop conditions over the next couple of days and will update further as needed.
