FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT REGION LETTUCE ICE

December 14, 2022

The Arizona/California desert growing region continues to experience low morning temperatures (low 30s), allowing lettuce ice to develop for the second consecutive day this week. Harvesting crews are being delayed up to three hours this morning and will start at roughly a 10:00 AM PST. The extended forecast calls for lettuce ice through this weekend and into early next week.

Markon inspectors are already seeing the effects of lettuce ice on the iceberg and leafy green crops, with both epidermal blistering and peeling present on product for the next five to seven days. Inspectors expect to see discolored epidermal peeling in finished packs by the end of December.
