FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT LETTUCE QUALITY

February 23, 2026

The Arizona/California desert growing region will experience another heat wave this week, with temperatures reaching into the upper 90s. This follows below-average temperatures and strong winds last week.

Lettuce and tender leaf items are especially sensitive to these erratic temperature swings, resulting in various quality and shelf-life concerns in both commodity and value-added packs. These challenges include, but are not limited to:

  • Dehydration
  • Elevated dirt/dust
  • Fringe burn/Wind damage
  • Growth cracks
  • Increased insect pressure
  • Internal burn
  • Long core/seeder
  • Mildew pressure
  • Shortened shelf-life
  • Weak tip

Markon inspectors are working with suppliers to select the best lots available for Markon orders and will take measures to minimize any weather-related defects. Ordering for quick turns is recommended.
