FROM THE FIELDS: DESERT HEAT SPIKE

February 11, 2022

The Arizona/California desert growing region is experiencing above-normal temperatures with daytime highs reaching mid-80s F to low 90s F through this weekend and gradually cooling down to mid-70s F by Wednesday, February 16.

Crops such as iceberg lettuce will benefit from warm weather, promoting growth and increasing case weights. Markon inspectors will be monitoring all commodities and value-added items for heat-related concerns. Tender leaf items such as arugula and spring mix may be more susceptible to dehydration, internal burn, or other types of heat stress.

Maintaining the cold chain throughout distribution is a critical part of maximizing quality and extending shelf-life. Markon inspectors will continue to monitor the situation closely and update with the latest.
